The Fort Pierce Orchid Society was formed formally on October 13, 1962 by a group of local hobby growers. F.P.O.S. has been tax exempt ( 501 c5 ) since 1968.  The Society was incorporated under the laws of Florida on June 18, 1965 and the charter states the objects and purposes as follows:

To encourage and foster the growing of orchids for pleasure.

To create an environment that will attract all persons with an interest in orchids and orchid growing.

To promote better knowledge and appreciation of orchids among the members of the society and the community.

To encourage a free exchange of experience and ideas so that all members may become better orchid growers.

To cultivate a keener perception of the beauty of color and form in order to  obtain the fullest enjoyment possible for orchids.

To recognize and appreciate the vast area of orchid knowledge from which all society members may benefit.

To enable all members of the society to contribute substantially to the knowledge and enjoyment of orchids, and to share the society’s collective knowledge of orchid appreciation  and orchid growing with all other members of the society and community.

The charter membership was closed on March 1, 1963

Our meetings and programs are varied with guest speakers, raffles and plant sales.  We have a “Show and Tell” table which gives members a chance to show off their blooming plants.  Auctions are held twice yearly and a summer picnic and a Christmas party are also held.  A monthly newsletter “The Orchid Connection” is mailed to the homes of members each month.

Florida and especially the Treasure Coast is an ideal area for growing orchids.  Contrary to popular opinion orchids are not difficult to grow, nor are they expensive.  Certain types do have different requirements which you must consider in order to have healthy plants.  They can be grown on a window sill, outdoors under a tree or on a patio.  Growing them is an absorbing hobby.  That is why each meeting becomes a learning experience.

You are invited to join us and learn all about orchids.
